I just got off the phone with Marcus’ Great- Abuela.
AbuelaShe is originally from Uruguay, and now lives in a very small Midwestern town. She is over 90 years old and I want to be her when I grow up. Today she said to me, “You are a mother with a capital M. Marcus teaches you. You love him and he teaches you and you teach the world.” “

Don’t give up,” she said, “You can do it.”

Wow.

I wish I could bottle her up and swig that down when I need it. I’d even share.

The music in the coffee shop is currently “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls.

“I don’t want the world to see me, ‘cause I don’t think they’d understand.

When everything seems to be broken, I just want you to know who I am.”

This is a favorite of Marcus and Mine. It hits us. We sing it loudly in the car when it comes on. It moves within me for my own reasons and it is impossible to not be moved when Marcus sings it. Marcus and I saw the Goo Goo Dolls together at an outdoor concert a few years ago and it rained. The lightening sparked on the horizon and the thunder loomed. The grass steamed, the rain came as a break.

Marcus and I and the crowd all sang and danced in the rain, everyone in their own space – “I just want you to know who I am” – it was really a kind of spiritual experience. I’m glad to have been there and I’m glad to remember it.

This week Marcus went to the dentist. His first trip since the extensive work done earlier in the year. Marcus handles his mornings independently, I usually head out to work before he is up and by the time I see him he’s taken his medicine, dressed, brushed teeth, had breakfast and what-not. I encourage this, but I was worried, about the teeth. Is he spending enough time? Is he getting the tough spots?

Well, he got a clean bill of teeth-health. Yea Marcus!

New song, “You found me” by the Fray. I wrote a whole chapter from the emotion wrought from this song. I played it over and over and over on a road trip and sang and cried and then wrote and wrote. I still don’t get the song. If you do, tell me what you think it means.
