Earlier this month, I stood next to my son, Marcus, while he spoke to a room of more than 1,200 spectators. It was unbelievable to witness.

The event was the star studded “Be Beautiful, Be Yourself” fashion show, which took place Nov. 11 in Denver. The Global Down Syndrome Foundation hosts this event each year to raise money to continue research and improve medical care for people with Down syndrome. Marcus was named the 2017 “Be Beautiful, Be Yourself” Ambassador.

Last year, Marcus Sikora — a 27-year-old Omaha writer, actor and fashion model with Down syndrome — got to walk the runway with an Oscar-winning actress. This weekend, he’ll walk with another.

Children’s author Marcus Sikora visited Horace Mann after receiving an award winning letter from a fifth grader.

Marcus Sikora is the author of the children’s book “Black Day”, a Halloween book about a boy wanting to be accepted into a monster band. Marcus Sikora got the idea for the book at a state park.

“I was at Mahoney State Park,” Marcus Sikora said. “It’s a great place to think about monsters.”

Marcus Sikora also draws his inspiration from activities he enjoys, especially theater. He has performed in local plays, and wrote a short one-act play.
