The Key to a Happy Life? Knowing What’s for Breakfast
Or a reliable PBJ Toast
I saw this post on my social network of choice:
We Relate
Every weekday Marcus has peanut butter and jelly toast and a yogurt for breakfast. Today is Sunday which means Marcus and I will have cheese omelettes.
When we’re traveling, Marcus makes his own toast. But whenever Quinn is around, Quinn makes the toast. I don’t know why both Quinn and Marcus prefer this, but they do.
The only day with breakfast “unplanned “ is Saturday morning, though Marcus will inquire ahead.
Can Confirm
Even though every weekday breakfast is the same, Marcus will frequently double check the menu and status the day before. Maybe while we’re making dinner, “Breakfast tomorrow?”
Quinn will either answer directly, or tease him first with other options, or questions, which always settle back to PBJ toast.
I use the weekend time/energy to cook/prep good food for my family and spend, probably more than average time on menu planning, grocery lists, and set up. But I too am picky about what I want to eat and what I want to feed my family- food is love you know!
Admittedly, there is a bit of OCD in the mental mix, but the way we map our meals is probably one of the healthier ways we maneuver through our mental health gymnastics.
Two psychological plus points:
- It’s healthy to look forward to things, even as simple as the next meal.
- Order and control: knowing what’s coming continues a sense of “order” in an unreliable world, as well as a sense of control.
When Marcus was born and I was “reading up” on how to be a parent and what “special” traits I may need to develop. One point was developing required consistencey, an organized and dedicated schedule, etc. I felt doomed, as my life then was generally chaos and a set timeline for any given day, did not exist. Marcus has trained me up a bit over the years. He likes to know the schedule for sure, and is very keen on putting in his phone calendar all of his plans. But he’s also learned to adjust to change…Plan B! is a common refrain between us.
On that note, I need to get rolling to start those omelettes…
